Topic: Geomalia

  OBC | publications | Four odd 'thrushes' | 1
Geomalia is only slightly less bizarre and, because it is so elusive, much more mysterious.
Most probably Geomalia is best placed in the group of brachypterygine birds [shortwings] (and indeed close to Heinrichia), unless one prefers to establish it in its own subfamily (Geomaliinae).
If Geomalia and the shortwings are distantly related, however, it is not feasible for modern authorities to follow the conventional treatment of the latter as thrushes - White and Bruce (1986) and Coates and Bishop (1997) do this - without taking Geomalia with them.

And clearly there is a lesson to be learnt from it - that appearances are deceptive, and behaviours are very unstable guides to taxonomic position.
It is fascinating to contemplate what similar syringeal, skeletal and chemical studies will make of the Grandala, Geomalia and Sulawesi Thrush; but this is not to exclude the possibility that intensive field study might produce new evidence to bear on all three forms.
The two latter remain so baffling that one is tempted to speculate whether they, and perhaps even Malia Malia grata, are isolated relics of a group of birds that share both timaliine and turdine features, ancestral to both and long marooned on the riddlingly interesting and appallingly neglected island of Sulawesi.

WORLDTWITCH - Wallacea, Indonesia Birding Trip Report by Jon Hornbuckle -- Sulawesi, Sangihe, Flores, West Timor, ...
Highlights were stellar views of 2 Diabolical Nightjars roosting together, Purple-bearded Bee-eater, Great Shortwing, Maroon-backed Whistler and Malia; but only SC had Sombre Pigeon and Geomalia, and no-one Small Sparrowhawk, Sul Woodcock or rails.
Later on we had a good under-storey flock inside the forest halfway up to the campsite, with Malia (behaving like foliage-gleaners), Sulawesi Thrush, Rusty-flanked Fantail and a strong suspicion that Geomalia had been present.
Geomalia: c.1km above campsite; Roy found nesting pair just above start of track.

It was quite a surprise to find an online photo of the little-known Geomalia of the Sulawesi highlands, and on the same site (Nell Tours) a photo of the endemic Blue Cuckoo-Shrike and Maleo, which though rare are much more likely to be seen than Geomalia.

Surfbirds Birding Trip Report: Sulawesi and Halmahera, Indonesia, August - September 2004
On our return, we discovered that even more birders had visited in summer 2004 so there should be a plethora of good, recent info for anyone planning a trip in the near future.
Top target birds were the charismatic Wallace’s Standardwing and the astonishing Ivory-breasted Pitta on Halmahera; together with a host of other endemics ranging from the fascinating Geomalia and Scaly Kingfisher of upland Sulawesi to the amazing Maleo and Rusty-backed Thrush in the lowlands.
Seen 3 times in the same area as the Geomalia on the Anaso Track with 2 sightings actually in the forest and a brief glimpse on the trail.

In July, birders located a Geomalia, Geomalia heinrichi, near the highest point along the Dongi-Dongi Road and pursued it into adjacent forest along an Anoa trail.
The same group watched a Snoring Rail, Aramidopsis plateni, cross the road near park headquarters (Kamarora).
