Several moth species in the family Tineidae are commonly regarded as pests because their larvae eat fabric such as clothes and blankets made from natural proteinaceous fibers such as wool or silk.
It may be moths navigate by maintaining a constant angular relationship to a bright celestial light (such as the moon), but on encountering a bright artificial light it navigates by maintaining a constant angle to the light, resulting in the moth flying in a spiral until it hits the light source.

Geometer moth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The geometer moths or Geometridae are a family of the order Lepidoptera.
As such they appear rather butterfly like but in most respects they are typical moths: The overwhelming majority fly at night, they possess a frenulum to link the wings and the antennae of the males are often feathered.
The name Geometer (earth-measurer) refers to the means of locomotion of the larvae or caterpillars.

Predation of moths is not much different from that of butterflies, with a few exceptions such as predation from bats due to the diurnal nature of moths and the large amount of moths predated on by birds where they congregate after being attracted to artificial lights.
Adult moths have diffuse colours of yellow-orange with rust coloured spotted shading towards the outer margin of the heavily scalloped fore and hind wings.
The adult moths of this subfamily are highly attracted to artificial lighting and when at rest, hold their wings out horizontally from their body taking on the shape of the letter “T” and therefore are sometimes referred to as “T” moths.

Moths are commonly regarded as pests because the larvae of a few species eat fabric such as clothes and blankets.
Moths of the type understood to be "attracted to light" are, instead, flummoxed by the proliferation of artifical lights in their local environment, which, if brighter than the brightest celestial object (e.g., the moon), will usurp that object's significance as the reference point for the moth's flight.
Encountering a brighter artificial light, as the moth maintains its angular relationship to the source of light (per its evolved mode of navigating), but, because the light is nearby, that consistent angle results in a decreasing spiral, until the moth strikes the light source.

Peppered moth - EvoWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Starting in 1953, Bernard Kettlewell conducted field experiments on the peppered moth, providing hard evidence that differential bird predation based on relative camouflage was the primary selective force contributing to the different fitnesses of the moth morphs in polluted and unpolluted environments.
For many readers, it may be enough to know that the peppered moth researchers are still supporting the differential bird predation theory, and that the scientific dissidents are (a) few in number and (b) armchair observers of peppered moth research.
Peppered moths fall with in the family Geometridae, the geometer or geometric moths; one of the numerous families of Lepidoptera.
