Topic: Geometroidea

  ::The Moths of Borneo::
He divided the old Geometroidea up into several superfamilies that were effectively monobasic, each containing a single family: Geometroidea, Drepanoidea and Uranioidea.
Subsequently (Minet, 1986, 1991), he has reunited the Uranioidea with the Geometroidea and suggested that this grouping has a sister-relationship with the Drepanoidea, indicated in particular by characters of the pupal groundplan (Minet and Scoble, in press): strong anterior extension of the forelegs; a transverse dorsal groove on A10.
This new concept of the Geometroidea is defined (Minet, 1991) on: the larval spinneret is shorter than the midline of the prementum; the ventral arm of the tegula in the adult is more or less pointed and elongated.

 Molecular phylogeny of the subfamilies in Geometridae (Geometroidea: Lepidoptera).   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Molecular phylogeny of the subfamilies in Geometridae (Geometroidea: Lepidoptera).Molecular sequence data from three gene fragments were used to examine critically a provisional phylogenetic classification based on morphological characters of the Geometridae, one of the most species-rich families of moths.
The sister group relationship between Geometridae and Drepanidae gained further support from the molecular analysis, which was based on the ND1 mitochondrial gene and the first and second expansion segments of the 28S ribosomal RNA gene.
The molecular results were used to explore further the relationship between Sterrhinae and Larentiinae, the question as to whether Ennominae actually represent a monophyletic group, and the relationships between Ennominae and some of the other subfamilies.

The data set is not well suited for an assessment of the position of the butterflies amongst other Lepidoptera.
Nevertheless, of the moths used, Macrosoma (Hedylidae, Hedyloidea) and Urania (Uraniidae, Geometroidea) appear to be the closest relatives of the butterflies.
With regard to the higher classification of the butterflies many problems thus remain, and several ways to tackle these are discussed.

The part therefore complements the three on Geometridae that follow in the numerical sequence but have already been published (Holloway, 1993[4], 1996, 1997).
The relationship of these groups to each other and to other macrolepidopteran groups is discussed on Callidulidae, Drepanoidea and Geometroidea.
The Castniidae could perhaps more appropriately be assigned to one of the first two parts, covering the Cossoidea and Zygaenoidea to which they are probably most closely related within the Apoditrysia (Minet, 1991).

 The Moths of Canada   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
We illustrate the 500+ species of the superfamily Geometroidea that occur in Canada, about one third of the North American fauna.
The superfamily Geometroidea includes the family Geometridae (Inchworm, Spanworm or Looper Moths), and the family Uraniidae (Sunset or Swallowtail Moths).
The Uraniidae is a large family of colourful moths, well represented in the tropics, but with only two species found in Canada.

 LepIndex - About the Viadocs Project
For example, if card number 38378 from the index was taken from drawer '40A', and the name of the taxon on the card was placed in the family Apoprogonidae of the superfamily Geometroidea, then the front image of the card would be named 'FC-Geometroidea-Apoprogonidae-40A-038378.jpg'.
The two images of this card would be saved in a folder named '40A' placed within the folder 'Apoprogonidae', which is in turn placed within a folder named 'Geometroidea'.
When the scanner interface programme is exited, it stores the number of the last card scanned.

 Re: Ears on butterflies.
But because certain butterflies are a food source for bats, they have evolved high-frequency echolocating tympana.
The Pyralidae (snout-moths) and members of the superfamily Geometroidea, including the Thyatiridae (thyatirid moths), Drepanidae (hook-tip moths), Geometridae (measuring worms), Epiplemidae, and Suraniidae, all have these organs on the anterior sternite (a subdividion of a sternum--the ventral plate of an abdominal segment) of the abdomen.
The Noctuoidea (common moths) have tympana located ventrolaaterally on the metathorax (the third posterior segment of the thorax).

 ::The Moths of Borneo::
This monograph is the tenth to be published in a series planned on the Bornean ‘macrolepidoptera’ superfamilies Cossoidea, Zygaenoidea, Bombycoidea (including Sphingidae), Noctuoidea, Geometroidea, Calliduloidea and Castnioidea.
Parts will appear over the next few years as regularly as the vagaries of life permit.
A field guide incorporating the colour plates is also being considered.
