Georg Baselitz was born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, a town that would become part of East Germany after World War Two.
In his early work, Baselitz searched for an alternative to the predominant art movements of the time and became interested in the art of the mentally ill. He was also influenced by abstract expressionist painters such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
Through the 1960s and 1970s Baselitz developed a distinctive physical expressionist style, which came to be a major influence on the Neo-Expressionist movement of the 1980s.

ART: GEORG BASELITZ AND HIS UPSIDE-DOWNS - New York Times
IT would be difficult to be in touch with new painting and not know by now that for quite some years the image in the paintings of Georg Baselitz has been painted upside down.
The reason for this is that Baselitz likes us to perceive the paint as paint, in the first place, and only then to take in the subject matter.
It may help to know, too, that Baselitz is also a sculptor - though perhaps ''hacker'' would be a better word for the way in which he goes at his huge blocks of wood.

Georg Baselitz Retrospective at Fondation de l’Hermitage | Art Knowledge News
Lausanne, Switzerland - German painter Georg Baselitz – a surname he adopted as a tribute to the small Saxon town where he was born in 1938 – is famous for his upside-down work.
Among the tiny galaxy of German painters, sometimes known as the ‘savages’ and discovered by art-lovers in the late Seventies and early Eighties, Baselitz was the closest to the French tradition due to the formal influence inherited from Cubism.
In a way Baselitz brings the painted surface up-to-date with what he is discovering at the same moment in sculpture (also displayed in Lausanne), where the shocks - the surface of the wood dented with an axe - are almost more expressive than the general shape erected in space.

A further leitmotif in Baselitz's new works is a fragment of leg, especially of a foot (sometimes in a shoe).
"In the motifs of tree and leg, Baselitz is constantly confronting – with shifting accents – the existential pair of opposites: staying and going; fixing and movement; standing and falling; obviously stably centred existence and being on the move (which always entails the danger of disorientation); the duration and the passing of existence.

ART: NEO-EXPRESSIONISM OF GEORG BASELITZ - New York Times
Certainly, the West German painter Georg Baselitz, whose work is on view through tomorrow at the Sonnabend Gallery, 420 West Broadway, is very much a painter with this point of view.
The use of figures and objects in his paintings is, to say the least, somewhat unusual.
Baselitz is, in any case, one of the most interesting painters to emerge from Germany - and from Europe generally - in the last decade, and this exhibition, which includes work since 1976, offers us the most comprehensive account of his art we have yet been given in this country.
