Herwegh in his poem "Homage" also signaled the danger that had arisen to thwart the implementation of the historical tasks of the revolution.
But while Freiligrath's poem was still breathing optimism, Herwegh's verse was already shadowed by bitter resignation about the course of the revolution in Germany.
Although in the 1840s Herwegh, an adherent of "true socialism", had portrayed the social problems of the emerging working class, it was Weerth and Freiligrath who discovered as a new object of lyrics the protest of the industrial worker, who was becoming aware of his force.

By Ludwig Richter THE LIFE OF GEORG WILHELM FRIEDRICH HEGEL BY J. Assistant in Philosophy, Harvard University Among students of philosophy the mention of Hegel's name arouses at once a definite emotion.
Apart from Hegel's special use of the term, it is this synthetic and creative and imaginative quality pervading his whole philosophy which has deepened men's insight into history, religion, and art, and which has wielded its general influence on the philosophic and literary constellation of the nineteenth century.
And by this must be understood, not a collection of general observations respecting it, suggested by the study of its records and proposed to be illustrated by its facts, but universal history itself.

The study first looks at the general evolution of national imagination among German intellectuals leading up to the revolution and proceeds to a closer examination of national symbolism and mythology as represented in the political lyric of three poets in the 1840s.
Particular attention is devoted to how previous intellectual tradition has shaped the nationalist rhetoric of Ferdinand Freiligrath, Emmanuel Geibel, and Georg Herwegh and to the reconciliation of liberal and nationalist ideologies in their work on the eve of the 1848 revolutions.
The study seeks to test the modernist contention that the (German) nation is largely a modern concept, initially constructed and imagined by a small elite of intellectuals and then passed onto the masses to achieve political realization.
