 Ed231C: A Rasch Model Example
Georg Rasch (1901-1980), a Danish statistician, gave an axiomatic derivation of the model in the 1960s.
Rasch models, along with other item response models, have an assumption of local independence, that is, the responses to a given item are independent of the responses to other items in the test.
Further, Rasch models, because they are one-parameter models, assume that all of the items have equal discrimination, that is, the items discriminate equally well for "good" subjects as they do for "poor" subjects.

 Georg Rasch's BPP, B Wright
The Rasch model for dichotomous items emerged from Georg Rasch's investigation of the BPP test, described in Rasch (Probabilistic Models for some Intelligence and Attainment Tests, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1980) Chapters 5, 6 and Appendix, p.
Georg Rasch's BPP, B Wright … Rasch Measurement Transactions, 1991, 5:3 p.

 NWEA The Measurement Scale
We call these parts RITs, which is short for Rasch Unit (after the test theory's founder, Danish statistician Georg Rasch).
Like meters or pounds, the scale is equal-interval, meaning that the distance between 170 and 182 is the same as the distance between 240 and 252.
Like using a ruler to measure a child's growth in height, we use the RIT scale to measure a student’s academic growth over time.
