Georg Ossian Sars began his studies of the Lofoten cod fishery in 1864, where he had been posted to determine the causes of fluctuations in the yield, which had been disappointing in the preceding decade.
In subsequent years, Sars followed the changing habits of cod from the pelagic to the benthic stage, and described the change in diet, first to larger zooplankton such as euphausiids, and later to bottom living crustaceans and polychaetes.
Sars was also unable to age the cod since no method for doing so existed at that time, and did not manage to proceed with the problem of how many kinds of cod there were.

Recently, a new coronavirus was identified as the suspected causative agent of an increased number of atypical pneumonia cases reported from Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, and Canada (1-4).

 Mar-Eco - 14. July
Among the smoothead species we caught, another also retains our attention, Bellocia michaelsarsi, a name given in honour of the famous Norwegian zoologist Michael Sars (1805-1869), the father of Georg Ossian Sars (1837-1927) also a famous zoologist and the person for whom the ship is named after.
No doubt, this was one of the most interesting species caught during the G.O. Sars Leg 2 cruise.

 World Association of Copepodologists Homepage
Pioneer scientists revealed the surprising reproduction and developmental metamorphosis of copepods as well as their roles throughout the natural world, particularly their significance at the food-base of fisheries.
Since copepods did not have the immediate impact or urgency of plants, insects, or larger animals, they were studied only incidentally until the middle of the 19th century.
Also, toward the end of the 19th century, the founder of ecology Karl Möbius (1825-1908) and his followers began to measure the precise impacts of copepods on their living and non-living surroundings.
