 The Congo Expedition: Early Ethnography
The stories were modified as Europeans encountered actual Zande and Mangbetu people, but exaggeration, distortion, and the elaboration of these fantasies continued well into the twentieth century, if not to this day.
Beginning with the first European encounter with the Mangbetu--the meeting between the German botanist Georg Schweinfurth and King Mbunza in 1870--the Mangbetu were stereotyped in myth.
Schweinfurth's florid account of the Mangbetu court in 1874 provided a model for subsequent descriptions, most of which exaggerated the power of the rulers and the prevalence of cannibalism.

Such sculptures portrayed the deceased, but the tombs themselves were also intended to show the rank he had attained in society through prowess in hunting and subsequent feast giving, and thus the influence he could exert on the living from the thereafter.
They probably belonged to the type of figural sculpture placed in the house in memory of the deceased that was described by Georg Schweinfurth, or are similar to those erected on either side of the road leading to the village noted by J. Petherick.

Population estimates of the Azande vary considerably, since it is difficult to tell exactly what boundaries the estimators have used or whether they have included related ethnic groups in their estimates.
When Schweinfurth visited the region in 1868-71, slavery was at its height.
While early Arab influence on the Azande had been minimal, that of Egyptian and Sudanese officials and, later, traders was much greater, eventually leading to a gradual breakdown of the big kingdoms into smaller chiefdoms.

View the Treasures of Maihirpre from KV 46
Never properly published by Loret, the only account of the discovery written while the objects were still in situ within KV 36 was penned by Georg Schweinfurth, a botanist, and appeared in the popular German magazine Vossische Zeitung on May 25, 1899.
Schweinfurth reported that thieves had removed some of the bandages from the mummy, and his statement was confirmed by Daressy, who added the detail that large sections of bandages had been cut with a sharp instrument which had been applied with particular force to the bandages of the legs.
Reeves dates this illicit activity in Maihirpre's tomb to the Ramesside period based on the evidence of 20'th Dynasty ostraca found in the vicinity of KV 36 by Howard Carter in 1902.
