After Fischler's charges were published in a Swiss magazine and in the Dec. 28 issue of The Nation magazine, Bertelsmann chief executive Thomas Middelhoff called for an investigation into his company's wartime past.
Holtzbrinck claimed it was "almost a member of the Resistance" and was stripped by the Nazis of its license to publish, according to an article published in the June 1998 issue of Vanity Fair.
The magazine reported, however, that Georg von Holtzbrinck was a member of the Nazi Party since 1933, and throughout the war operated several profitable publishing companies and published Nazi-sanctioned magazines.

Founder Georg von Holtzbrinck was born in 1909 and gained control in 1937 of the Bibliothek der Unterhaltung und des Wissens, a Stuttgart-based book club founded in 1876.

Despite being raised in wealthy social circles, Straus attended Hamilton College for one year before transferring to the journalism school at the University of Missouri.
Straus was only 29 years old when he and John Farrar launched their publishing company in 1946.

Roger W. Straus jnr, the brash and opinionated grandee who presided for nearly six decades over the book publishing company that bore his name, the last surviving representative of the age of independent houses owned privately by gentlemen of literary taste, has died in New York.
Later, such was Straus's presence in his publishing house that finally no room could be provided for his son, Roger W. Straus III, who after several attempts at working for the company with the idea of eventually taking it over, left the business in 1993 over "philosophical differences", a company news release said.
But his protestations were deemed by some of his intimates to be a pose for someone who was actually a sensitive reader and a lover of good prose.
