 Dawn of the Dead DVD
George Romero weaves emphasis on the greed we all have and find ourselves taking a firm grasp of when the world around us is in a rapid state of decline and we can easily reach our palms out and take what we most desire or never could have.
George Romero never touched upon this sadly, but one can only imagine the mind is placed in a limbo between heaven and hell bound by its own body and trapped without a soul.
What George Romero does without exempting indifference is place his female leads in an environment where her species is alone and surrounded by men.

 Dawn of the Dead (1978)
George A. Romero shot those scenes in a gun shop in downtown Pittsburgh and edited the footage in to make it look like it was a shop in the mall.
The film shows SWAT teams, complete with racist officers, who kill for fun, raiding an unruly group of Hispanics and Blacks, hillbillies heading out in troops to battle zombies for sport, mercenaries and vigilantes running wild, all events indistinguishable from incidents in the 70's.
However, a refreshing sense of black humor is tossed in towards the middle of the film.

 Film Threat - Reviews
George Romero’s 1979 masterpiece “Dawn of the Dead” is one of the greatest horror films of all time - a brilliant horror-satire that combined gruesome effects and exploding body parts with a social commentary about Vietnam, racism and urban decay in America in the 1970s.
I think Romero did this, in “Dawn of the Dead” especially, to illustrate the predictable and sloppy monotony of us humans particularly when it came to the zombies’ neural consumer impulse to flock to a shopping mall long after their brains had been turned to mush.
Why is there any need to remake a film as great as “Dawn of the Dead?” If you were to walk into a video store, twenty years from now, would there be any reason to see this film instead of Romero’s?

Zombies, Malls, and the Consumerism Debate: George Romero's Dawn of the Dead
Romero is not merely interested, however, in decrying commodity fetishism as spiritually deadening or politically inert; on the contrary, he stubbornly returns to the theme of exploitation.
Romero certainly recognized the dramatic potential of the mall, which may be regarded as both the epitome of corporate capitalism and — for the same reason — a potential site of resistance to the forces that regulate consumerism.
In Romero's defence, it might be said that the dramatic exigencies of cinematic narrative rarely permit sociological completeness; Romero's film, one might say, selects only the worst elements of consumerism for critique and should not be taken as a generalizing statement.

Romero's `Dawn of the Dead' took the premise of people trapped in mall and used it to make some pointed social commentary about consumerism.
The first film remains an intelligent critique on human actions during the apocalypse, while this is just a suspense drama that is dressed to kill.

 Dawn of the Dead (2004)
The movie, a remake of George Romero's classic 1978 sequel to `Night of the Living Dead,' throws a group of people together while society crumbles around them and allows the viewer to watch as humans seek to survive an onslaught of the undead.
The first '`Dawn' had human characters selfishly hoarding material goods for themselves, using the mall not only as a refuge from zombies but also as their own personal palace that provides them with more items than they could ever need.
Luckily, `Dawn of the Dead' has strong personalities to fall back on, making it thankfully every bit a character-driven drama as it is a horror-action piece.

George Romero's Dawn of the Dead
Famous film critic Roger Ebert called George Romero’s ( Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead) zombie classic Dawn of the Dead "an ultimate horror film!" and "a savagely satanic vision of America." And while I generally find Ebert to be fairly insightful, I can’t help but feel he missed the boat here.
There’s no doubt that he’s right when he calls Dawn of the Dead an ultimate horror film, because it is. No, where Ebert misses the mark is in the second comment—yes, Dawn is a savagely satanic vision of immense proportion, but it’s a film that encompasses more than the American experience.
Dawn has a decidedly bleak, almost nihilistic worldview —one that encompasses all of mankind, not just certain geographical regions.
