George Amick was born in Vermonia, Oregon, but was living in Venice, California.
George had the mother of all crashes at turn 1 in practice and came within inches of being killed when he flipped wildly through turn 1 and snapped off a light pole 20 feet in the air.
George Amick became the second driver to die at Daytona, following Marshall Teague who had perished on February 11, during preparations for this race.

He retired in July 1991 but continued to return as a consultant in May for many years thereafter.
Beckley was the winning chief mechanic in 12 National Championship events (four under AAA sanction and eight under USAC) between 1950-68, with drivers Jim Rathmann, Jack McGrath, Roger McCluskey, Tony Bettenhausen, Bobby Marshman and George Amick.
His second- and third-place finishes were numerous, including a pair of seconds, plus a couple of pole positions with A. Foyt during the summer of 1962.
