George Anson, 1st Baron Anson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George's father was William Anson of Shugborough in Staffordshire, and his wife was Isabella Carrier, who was the sister-in-law of Thomas Parker, 1st Earl of Macclesfield, the Lord Chancellor, a relationship that proved very useful to the future admiral.
George Anson entered the navy in February 1712, and by rapid steps became lieutenant in 1716, commander in 1722, and post-captain in 1724.
Anson took his prize back to Macao, sold her cargo to the Chinese, and sailed for England, which he reached via the Cape of Good Hope on 15 June 1744.

It is the story of two friends, Jack Byron and Tobias Barrow who sail aboard the as part of Anson's 1740 expedition.

Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
He was born in London, the second son of, who died governor of Barbados in March 1735, and of Mary Sophia Charlotte, a daughter of Baroness Kilmansegge, afterwards Countess of Darlington, the mistress of King George I--a relationship which does much to explain his early rise in the navy.
On the outbreak of the Revolutionary war in 1793 he was again named to the command of the Channel fleet.
Though Howe was now nearly seventy, and had been trained in the old school, he displayed an originality not usual with veterans, and not excelled by any of his successors in the war, not even by Nelson, since they had his example to follow and were served by more highly trained squadrons than his.
