George Arliss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Arliss (10 April 1868- 5 February 1946) was a British actor.
Arliss began his acting career on the stage.
He often appeared with his wife, Florence Arliss (1871 - 1950), to whom he was married from 16 September 1899 until his death; they had a son, Leslie Arliss, who became a prolific producer-director for Gainsborough Studios, with such films as Love Story (1944) and The Wicked Lady (1945).

 VOLTAIRE - A Film
Arliss had a long and successful career on the stage before he began appearing in films in the 1920's and had often expressed his wish to play the great eighteenth century French philosopher and author on the stage, but he was never able to find a satisfactory vehicle.
Arliss, who was consulted frequently by the studio during the preproduction planning, was sensitive to the problems of presenting an intellectual on the screen.
Arliss believably portrays Voltaire as a many-faceted man who can be obsessed with his work at the expense of his health at one time and almost foppishly concerned about his appearance at another.

One of the oldest actors on the screen in the 1920s and 1930s, George Arliss starred on the London stage from an early age.
But that's only half the story: Arliss was also a splendid light comedy actor who made numerous charming domestic frou-frous as well, often appearing opposite his wife, Florence Montgomery.
In all of Arliss' performances, his plummy voice, bemused expression, and absolute command of audience attention mark him as a very special performer in sore need of rediscovery.

Arliss was coming to the end of his career in films and this was I supose a fitting finale.
For his final movie performance, Arliss switched from his normally elegant, historical roles to play a mysterious old vicar of Dymchurch, a town on the Southern English coast that still exists.
Instead of Disney's masked, dashing, laconic, and equestrian vicar Arliss gives us a frail-looking old parson who is alternately kindly, clever, deceptive, intimidating and enraged, a truly complex role challenging enough for Arliss.
