USS GEORGE BANCROFT was the fourth BENJAMIN FRANKLIN - class nuclear powered fleet ballistic missile submarine and the fourth ship in the Navy named after George Bancroft.
The GEORGE BANCROFT was both decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on September 21, 1993.
George Bancroft was born in Worcester, Mass., 3 October 1800.

After more than six months of construction and tireless efforts to raise money for its completion, the USS George Bancroft (SSBN 643) Sail Exhibit was dedicated April 7, 2000.
Out of them, 59 were designated ballistic missile submarines, including today's 18 Ohio class submarines and the first SSBNs known as the "Forty-one for Freedom." USS Bancroft was one of the original "Forty-one for Freedom" boats that served during the Cold War era.

Arrival of USS JOHN MARSHALL (SSBN 611) at Rota, Spain, for refit, marked the successful completion of the 1,000th POLARIS deterrent patrol since the POLARIS weapon system was initially deployed on USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (SSBN 598) on 15 November 1960.
POLK was the 16th SSBN to be provided with C-3 capability.

Robert Brenner made two post-construction, post-overhaul shakedown cruises and nine deterrent patrols - one as an enlisted Navigation Electronics Technician on board USS Lewis & Clark SSBN 644 and eight as an officer on USS George Bancroft SSBN 643.
During Electronics A School, he volunteered for submarine duty and was on the commissioning crew of the USS Lewis & Clark SSBN 644.
Upon graduating Ensign Brenner returned to submarine school in New London, Connecticut and then attended a number of missile weapons schools before reporting to the USS George Bancroft (SSBN 643).

The following information was provided by Bob Deremer, Jr: The George Bancroft was authorized in 1963, launched on March 20, 1965 and commissioned January 22, 1966.
Bob's father, Robert Deremer Sr., served on Diesel Boats in WWII and then worked at General Dynamics/Electric Boat for about thirty years after his Naval service.
worked on the missile systems for the SSBN's and through him and those like him, enabled the George Bancroft and other SSBN's to be brought to life.
