Giorgio Borg Olivier (5 July 1911 - 29 October 1980) was three times Prime Minister of Malta (1950 to 1955 and 1962 to 1971) as the Leader of the Nationalist Party.
With the return of responsible Government in 1947 Dr. Borg Olivier was elected to the Legislative Assembly and was later Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
On the 14th June, 1968, Dr Borg Olivier was decorated with the Grand Cross of Merit of the Order of Malta by the Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitallier Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta.

Paul Boffa of the Partit Laburista (Malta Labour Party, PL) becomes prime minister, but he is succeeded in 1950 by 1955 George Borg Olivier of the PN.
In 1960 the PN under Borg Olivier wins the elections and demands independence.
Borg Olivier becomes prime minister in 1962 and in 1964 Malta is granted independence as a parliamentary democracy.

It was soon made known that the Attorney General Prof J J Cremona, was working of a draft constitution while it was announced that a Malta Independence Conference was to be held at Marlborough House, London.
Further discussions were held in February 1964 and in March 1964 Duncan Sandys and Borg Olivier issued a Joint Statement declaring that Borg Oliver was going to present the draft constitution before the National Assembly and after its approval, it would be presented to the Maltese electorate for a referendum.
Dr Borg Olivier proceeded to London to discuss the constitution, a Defence Agreement and Economic Aid.

On 15 April 1942, King George VI awarded the George Cross (the highest civilian award for gallantry) "to the island fortress of Malta--its people and defenders." President Franklin Roosevelt, describing the wartime period, called Malta "one tiny bright flame in the darkness."
After the war, the islands were given self-rule, with the Maltese Labour Party (MLP) of Dom Mintoff favouring closer integration with Britain, and the Nationalist Party (PN) of Dr George Borg Olivier favouring further independence.
In December 1955, a Round Table Conference was held in London, on the future of Malta, attended by Mintoff, Borg Olivier and other Maltese politicians, along with the British Colonial Secretary, Alan Lennox-Boyd.

During a May 25, 1950 Legislative Assembly sitting, Labour Minister Dr Colombo moved the sum of £40,000 as a supplementary estimate to cover preliminary expenses in connection with the rebuilding of the Royal Opera House.
In April 1952, the Nationalist-Workers' Party coalition which had ousted Labour, set up the Royal Opera House Reconstruction Committee with the Prime Minister, Dr George Borg Olivier, as Chairman.
