CHARLES COTTON (1630-1687), English poet, the translator of Montaigne, was born at Beresford in Staffordshire on the 28th of April 1630.
Cotton travelled in France and perhaps in Italy, and at the age of twenty-eight he succeeded to an estate greatly encumbered by lawsuits during his father's lifetime.
Cotton's reputation as a burlesque writer may account for the neglect with which the rest of his poems have been treated.

Cotton House began life in 1836 and was named Cotton in 1931 after Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton, former Assistant Master of Rugby School and later Master of Marlborough College and Bishop of Calcutta.

Bishop Cotton personally reconnoitred ten sites in September and October 1864, and finally approved the South end of Knollswood Spur which belonged to the Rajah of Keonthal.
After lengthy negotiations the site was acquired through the intervention of the Viceroy and the foundation stone for the new buildings was laid o­n 26th September 1866, by H.E. the Viceroy, Sir John Lawrence.
By the turn of the century, the reputation of the school was undeniable and greatly helped by staff who were mainly educated at Oxford and Cambridge.
