George French Angas   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
George French Angas was the 4th son of George Fife Angas, ‘Merchant of Newcastle on Tyne’, and his wife Rosetta French, a Gentleman’s daughter from Essex.
This was the background into which George French was born, and even as he was the eldest son and expected to follow in his father’s footsteps devoting his life to commerce, he showed early and enduring talents as a natural history artist, especially of the marine life by his boyhood home of Dawlish in Devon.
It seems inevitable that George French was drawn to this little known part of the globe to record its environment and the early stages of a unique colony in a publication called South Australia Illustrated which was to be financed by subscribers.

It was Angas, who had in 1836 already pushed for the establishment of a South Australian Police Force, who donated the land and materials and in 1856 the Barossa Valley's first police station was completed.

At the same time, the Romantic aesthetics of the time encouraged subjective, experiential accounts of what George French Angas called "savage life and scenes" in the antipodes.
The Romantic writers exploited the pure exoticism of place for the sake of pure experience.
Among the travel accounts, I will consider George French Angas's Savage Life and Scenes in Australia and New Zealand (1847), Marcus Clark's "Preface" to Gordon's Poems (1876), and Francis Adams's The Australians: A Social Sketch (1893) as examples of Romantic travelers.
