George Gardiner, a past president of the Toronto Stock Exchange whose ceramic art collection formed the foundation for the Gardiner museum in Toronto, died Sunday after a lengthy illness.
Gardiner, who was born in Toronto, earned a commerce degree at the University of Toronto and a master's degree in business administration at Harvard University.
Gardiner and his wife, Helen, donated their personal collection to the museum, which at the time was the largest cultural gift ever made in Canada, the museum says.

Mr Major, who had earlier tried unsuccessfully to remove Sir George as chairman of the influential right-wing 92 Group of Conservatives, described Gardiner as "a viper slithering around in the parliamentary pit" in his autobiography.
Sir George was born on 3 March, 1935, and educated at Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone, and Balliol College, Oxford.

The Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art opened in 1984, when Toronto philanthropist George Gardiner and his wife, Helen, gave a purpose-built building and their outstanding ceramics collection to the people of Canada.
The Gardiners had accumulated a remarkable collection of Ancient American artifacts and one of the world's most noted collections of European pottery and porcelain from the 15th to the 19th centuries.
Before his death at the age of 80, he donated a $15 million endowment to the Museum and the Gardiner regained its independence from the Royal Ontario Museum (the Gardiner was administered by the ROM from 1989 until 1996).

Albert George Gardiner  was born on 26 October 1896, the fourth child of John Gardiner and Martha Hannah (nee Turner).
He sailed for the war zone on 16 September 1916 (possibly aboard A73 Commonwealth) and after a period of training in England was sent to France joining the 53rd Battalion at the Somee Valley. In March 1917, the 53rd Battalion participated in the Allied advance that followed the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line.
On 14 March 1917, Gardiner was admitted to hospital with severe gunshot wounds to the back.  After an initial period where his condition improved, his condition became more serious and he died on 10 April 1917 at St Sever.

The Moriarty text gives an extensive and comprehensive analysis of Herodias Long's various relationships, and establishes with reasonable certainty that she was the mother of Benoni Gardiner.
While there is no doubt that a George Gardiner married a Sarah Slaughter, and had the two children listed, it seems almost certain that this was not George Gardiner of Narragansett, R.I. Sarah SLAUGHTER was born about 1604 in of London, England.
The Moriarty text calls the Robinson book theory of this child being a son of George of Narragansett into great question.
