Garfield, not daunted at all, concentrated his little force and moved it with such rapidity, sometimes here and sometimes there, that General Marshall was deceived by his moves and still more by false reports which were skillfully prepared for him.
Garfield held his own until reinforced by Generals Graner and Sheldon, when Marshall gave way, leaving Garfield the victor at Middle Creek, January 10, 1862, one of the most important of the minor battles of the war.
Garfield was retuned to duty under General Rosencrans who made him his chief of staff, with responsibilities beyond those usually given to this office.

The frame building which became for a time known as the New City Hall, is still standing in the rear of #365 quite a way back from the roadway, north of South 5th St. In this building the Universalist Church was organized about 1845.
The building was originally no doubt a residence with an excellant view of the river, now it is a mere shell covered with a coat of red paint.

On May 3`, 2003, I visited Joseph L. Hall's marker, which is a tall White marble obelisk, on which, the inscription is very faded and hard to read.
Visited grave site in Concordia, KS May 31, 2003..It is a Red-Gray Granite tombstone, flush/4 inches to the ground that says "Mother' Lucina Elizabeth Hall." It sits next to Joseph L. Hall's marker, which is a tall White marble obelisk, on which, the inscription is very faded and hard to read.
HALL was born in Franklin County, Ohio, May 5, 1834.
