George Gilfillan - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
GEORGE GILFILLAN (1813-1878), Scottish author, was born on the 30th of January 1813, at Comrie, Perthshire, where his father, the Rev. Samuel Gilfillan, the author of some theological works, was for many years minister of a Secession congregation.
He published a volume of his discourses in 1839, and shortly afterwards another sermon on "Hades," which brought him under the scrutiny of his co-presbyters, and was ultimately withdrawn from circulation.
Gilfillan next contributed a series of sketches of celebrated contemporary authors to the Dumfries Herald, then edited by Thomas Aird; and these, with several new ones, formed his first Gallery of Literary Portraits, which appeared in 1846, and had a wide circulation.

Dr George William Gilfillan was born in Henry county on October 29, 1899, where his father, Dr Homer J Gilfillan, whose record precedes this, began his own medical practice in 1896.
Dr George W Gilfillan, paternal Grandfather of the subject of this sketch, began his medical practice in Bentonsport, Van Buren County, in 1857, and died in 1908, at Mount Pleasant.
The present Dr George W Gilfillan spent most of his early life in Mount Pleasant, where for years his father and grandfather were partners in practice, and where the father later continued in independent practice.

 The Gilfillan Brothers Biographi
Dr Homer J Gilfillan, who for a time practiced with his pioneering father and then for years was in independent practice in various parts of the state, is the father of six sons, all of whom are also medical men.
He is the son of Dr George W Gilfillan, who practiced in southeastern Iowa from 1857 until his death in 1908, an honored pioneer, and the grandson of Dr Edward Gilfillan, who practiced medicine in Pennsylvania in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Dr Homer J Gilfillan, Jr., married Grace Norris of Cantril, the daughter of Clyde and Martha (McClain) Norris, and they are the parents of one son, Norris Gilfillan, born in 1931, who, in 1949, was a premedical student at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

 Letter from Joseph A Gilfillan
Gilfillan shortly after the turn of the century—but we are not sure which book, or what the title may have been.
There George, the most famous for his "Bards of the Bible," "Literary Portraits," etc., was born, and his brother James, author of "The Sabbath," a standard work.
As an instance of the "unbalanced" Gilfillans, I find two men of that name in the list of the Roman Catholic clergy of the U.S. George Gilfillan is the great literary genius, and the large "George Gilfillan Memorial Hall" is built in Dundee (Scotland) to his memory.

 Descendants of Alexander Gilfillan
Note: The information on Alexander Gilfillan is taken from several different sources, early letters, land records of the Ballinamore area near Londonderry, and some private papers I was privileged to see while touring Northern Ireland in the spring of 1995.
From personal papers he possessed, S. Colum Gilfillan of California believed this early ancestor was named Alexander, and early land records in County Derry do show an Alexander owning land there some years before the five men, whom we assume were his sons, are mentioned.
It is said that he taught music to the public for a living (probably singing lessons).

About this poem George Gilfillan, to whom Hall Caine sent it in 1876, wrote that there was much in it that he admired, that it had the ring of genius, but that in parts it was spoiled by affectations of language which could, however, be remedied.
Of the same poem, Rossetti, to whom it was also sent, wrote that it contained passages of genius.
Many of his friends, indeed, hope for even better things from him as a dramatist; and Blackmore, for instance, hardly ever writes to him without repeating that, great as has been his success as a novelist, it will be nothing to his success when he gets possession of the stage.

In Search of the World's Worst Writers: William MacGonagall
This has all the classic elements of the great MacGonagall; the uneven line lengths, the accumulation of pointless detail and the ridiculously anti-climactic ending.
Instead of seeing the Rev. Gilfillan as a dignified man of learning, we are left with the picture of a bloke yelling his head off about Garibaldi.
Over subsequent years, MacGonagall was to publish four books of verse and cement his reputation as Britain's worst poet.
