The younger son, laird of Stitchel in Roxburghshire, was the ancestor of William de Gordon of Stitchel and Lochinvar, founder of the Galloway branch of the family represented in the Scottish peerage by the dormant viscounty of Kenmure (q.v.), created in 1633; most of the Irish and Virginian Gordons are offshoots of this stock.
Sir Adam's daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, married Sir Alexander Seton, and with her husband was confirmed in 1408 in the possession of the barony of Gordon and Huntly in Berwickshire and of the Gordon lands in Aberdeen.
Lord George Gordon (q.v.) was a younger son of the 3rd duke.

GEORGE GORDON ABERDEEN, 1ST Earl Of (1637-1720), lord chancellor of Scotland, son of Sir John Gordon, 1st baronet of Haddo, Aberdeenshire, executed by the Presbyterians in 1644, was born on the 3rd of October 1637.
His person was said to be deformed, and his "want of mine or deportment" was alleged as a disqualification for the office of lord chancellor.
He married Anne, daughter and sole heiress of George Lockhart of Torbrecks, by whom he had six children, his only surviving son, William, succeeding him as 2nd earl of Aberdeen.

In 1529 the Earl of Huntly received a charter from the King of the lands of the Lordship of Strathdee and Cromar, excepting Migvie, for a rent of £180, twenty marts (cattle), and six bolls of oats.
Earl George was by charter created Sheriff of Aberdeen upon the resignation of David Lindsay, Earl of Crawford; and he was also Heritable Baillie of the lands belonging to the Bishop of Aberdeen.
The Earl of Huntly fought on foot at the battle of Pinkie, and was taken a prisoner and conveyed to England.

In 1682 George was appointed High Chancellor of Scotland and was, in the same Year, raised to the peerage of Scotland as the 1st Earl of Aberdeen.
His first wife was the daughter of the Earl of Leven and Melville, his second, the daughter of the Duke of Atholl and his third, who he married in 1729, the daughter of the Duke of Gordon.
The Third Earl's son, Lord Haddo was killed in an unfortunate riding accident at Gight in 1795 and the Haddo Estate was inherited by his son, the 3rd Earl's grandson George.

The Gordons are of Norman origin and settled in the South of Scotland in the 12th Century.
