 Bryophytes and Buildings: Old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Florence Nightingale's principles of open layout were adopted and, with her approval, the hospital was built as a series of parallel pavilions projecting from either side of a long corridor on three floors.
The hospital succeeded the Earlier Royal Infirmary which was built in 1738 in the reign of King George II and from whom it received its Royal Charter.
A bronze statue of George II (created by James Hill in 1753) and costumed as a victorious Roman general stood outside the main entrance to the infirmary.

George Heriot (1563-1624) was probably born in Edinburgh.
James appointed George Goldsmith to his queen, Anne of Denmark, in 1597 and, in 1601, he was appointed jeweler and goldsmith to the king himself.
He died without legitimate issue but left a substantial amount for the provision of a hospital in his home city as well as for the education of orphans.

Trials were held in early September at George Watson’s College and were followed by six training sessions and two practice matches.

At the Scottish Schools' Head of the River Race on the Clyde on Saturday 18th April, ASRA won both the Women's Junior 15 and the Men's Junior 15 Pennants.
Not to be outdone, our ASRA Boys' J15 Four - Gary Wilson (Aberdeen Grammar School), Jonathan Wright (Harlaw Academy), Johnathan Lockhart (Robert Gordon's College), Atholl Wallace (Meldrum Academy) coxed by Daniel McSherry (Harlaw Academy) put an almost incredible 61 seconds between themselves and their nearest opposition - the MJ15 crew from George Heriot's of Edinburgh.
The Bedford High School crew (Schools' Head 2005 WJ16 Champions) which forced our exit in the first round by just four seconds won the bronze medal and the gold medal went to our old rivals George Heriot's of Edinburgh.

Katy Knowles, Lizi Hills, Jacqui Round and Joanna Fitzsimons were in action at Henley having already won the Schools Head of the River in March.
Loades and Nesbitt were part of a junior coxed four, and they beat a boat from Oundle School in their first race, but in the semi-final they lost by two lengths to a Henley crew.
Henderson was also in a composite crew in the junior coxed fours, which lost to George Heriots School, who were the eventual winners.

The last racers of the day were the WJ14 double of Gemma Brown and Mary Triddon who had battled through there heat, coming fifth, to make the repachage.
