The son of missionaries who spent portions of his early life in the Far East, George Houser served on the staff of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in the 1940s and '50s.
With Bayard Rustin, another FOR staffer, Houser, a white Methodist minister, co-led the Journey of Reconciliation, the first interracial Freedom Ride through the South in 1947, in response to the Supreme Court 's ruling in Irene Morgan vs. Virginia the previous Year.
Academics and the participants themselves agreed the founders of CORE were Jim Farmer, George Houser and Berniece Fisher.

CORE was conceived as a pacifist organization based on the writings of Henry David Thoreau and modeled after Mohandas Gandhi 's non-violent resistance against British rule in India.
As pacifists, Rustin, Houser, and other members of FOR and CORE were arrested for violating the Selective Service Act.
This was the first of the Freedom Rides to test the ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States that banned racial discrimination in interstate travel.

Houser was born in the vicinity of Ft. Recovery, over in the neighboring county of Mercer, in Ohio, October 14, 1848, and is the posthumous son and only child of William and RachelDowns Houser, both of whom also were born in Ohio.
Houser took possession, but he presently got the place under cultivation and as his affairs prospered added to his holdings by the purchase of an adjacent tract of 110 acres, thus having 233 acres, on which as the years passed he developed an admirable farm plant.
Mary Houser was born in Germany and was but a child of two years when she came with her parents, John and Catherine Menchoffer, to America, the family proceeding on out to Ohio and settling in Mercer county.

Houser was chosen as class leader, and this little band was the nucleus from which has grown the large and flourishing congregation now known as the " First Methodist Episcopal Church of Kenton." Some itinerant made his appearance every two weeks to preach, holding services at the cabins of the settlers.
Houser's expense, the preacher was allowed to proceed, and the collection proved a gratifying success.

This integrated team of sixteen people with George Houser and Bayard Rustin as the organizers, set out on the Journey of Reconciliation, a two week pilgrimage through Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky on Greyhound and Trailway busses.
In fact, in February 1948 the Council Against Intolerance in America gave Houser and Bayard Rustin the Thomas Jefferson Award for the Advancement of Democracy for their attempts to bring an end to segregation in interstate travel.
