JOSEPH HOWARTH, of the firm of J. Howarth & Son, of the marble, slate, granite and mantel works, Washington, Penn., was born at Barnsley, England, January 14, 1826.
Joseph Howarth, of whom this biographical sketch mainly treats, was brought by his parents to this country in 1830.
Howarth is the oldest resident marble cutter in Washington, and from a very small beginning has made his own success, and won an enviable popularity through strict attention to business, earnest perseverance, judicious economy and unquestionable integrity in all his dealings.

George's son Benjamin was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or "Mormon" church) on 6 November 1842, and at that time gave his residence as 1 Boundary Street, Salford.
George's wife Nanny died 9 March 1870, and a record of her death was found in the Salford District, Lancs civil registration.
George's son Benjamin emigrated to Utah, and in 1873 he baptized George for the dead in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah.

 MP calls for fireworks ban
The call from George Howarth, Labour MP for Knowsley North and Sefton East, comes two days after a police officer was injured by a firework thrown into a Liverpool police station.
Mr Howarth said stricter licensing laws are not working and a ban is needed on the manufacture, import and sale of fireworks except for those used in public displays.

At an event organised by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) in Parliament yesterday (3 March), Labour MP George Howarth and Conservative MP Boris Johnson launched an Early Day Motion1 demanding compensation for the 62 members of the Association of Swill Users (ASU).
The £40 million swill processing industry was closed down after it was alleged FMD spread from swill used on a single pig farm in Heddon-on-the-Wall owned by the Waugh brothers.
Speaking at the event George Howarth MP said, “We want the Government to accept that they have taken away people's livelihoods as a result of Defra's failure to supervise one farm.”
