Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hurrell originally studied as a painter with no particular interest in photography.
After she showed these photographs to her husband Irving Thalberg, Thalberg was so impressed that he signed Hurrell to a contract with MGM Studios, making him head of the portrait photography department.
Hurrell died shortly after completing the documentary from complications from his long standing problem with bladder cancer.

In the 1934 article posted in Trouble in Paradise Hurrell names Joan Crawford (6) as his favorite subject, but in the TV program I watched his fondest memories were of Myrna Loy (9), whom he said could change facial expression in a second.
In 1934 he criticized Garbo for not being very cooperative as a photographic subject; however, in the later TV show he elaborated on that, saying that her seriousness and passivity in front of the camera were a personal choice.

 Zuga.net - George Hurrell video?
I hope someone knows where I can buy a copy of "Legends in Light - George Hurrell." It was a TNT 1 hour show in 1994 (sorry!) but I just found out about it.
I saw an HGTV program yesterday where a guy in LA bought an old '20s house and in the attic he found a huge box of 8x10 negs that George Hurrell had done along with some other negs the original homeowner had done so he must have worked at the studio with Hurrell.
Note: Here is the name/address/phone of the lady at the gallery I ordered from in case you want to order or have questions about the video - I think she sells prints too.
