Topic: George Jefferson

  The Jeffersons
For the next eleven seasons, the Jeffersons adjusted to their nouveau riche world in apartment 12D, living among a kaleidoscope of characters including a sycophantic doorman named Ralph, a bizarre British neighbor named Bentley, and Tom and Helen Willis, television’s first married couple in which one character was fl and one was white.
Because the Jeffersons’ son, Lionel, was dating the Willises’ daughter, Jenny, George had a field day throwing racial epithets at the “zebra” Willises.
The Jeffersons was an extremely well-made show whose style and structure informed many famous series that came later; its influence is felt in the farce of Frasier, the family dynamic of Everybody Loves Raymond, and the wit of Will and Grace.

George Jefferson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Jefferson is a fictional character, played by actor Sherman Hemsley, who appeared on primetime American television from 1973 until 1985, in two CBS sitcoms: All in the Family (from 1973 until 1975) and its spinoff The Jeffersons (1975-1985).
George Jefferson was an ambitious African American entrepreneur who started and managed a successful chain of seven dry cleaning stores in New York City called Jefferson Cleaners.
Prior to George opening his store, he had worked as a janitor (and Louise as a housemaid); the family lived in a run-down section of Harlem prior to their move to Queens (which was often referred to during The Jeffersons).

Jefferson's reference to the voluntary allegiance of colonists to the crown was struck; also deleted was a clause that censured the monarchy for imposing slavery upon America.

 A George Will Follies Review
Jefferson quite blithely wrote that America's Constitution would not be adequate to defend what he called liberty, that there would have to be a new revolution every 15 or 20 years, and that the tree of liberty needed to be nourished regularly with a fresh supply of patriot blood.
Jefferson is only of value to them because of the powerfully-expressed words he left behind belittling the importance of government, the only possible counterbalancing force to the excesses that always arise from great economic growth.
Jefferson, despite a long and successful career and a legacy of fine words (expressing thoughts largely cribbed from European writers), cannot be credited with any significant personal sacrifice over matters of principle during his life.

The Thomas Jefferson Papers - America and the Barbary Pirates - (American Memory from the Library of Congress)
I accordingly prepared, and proposed to their ministers at Paris, for consultation with their governments, articles of a special confederation." Jefferson argued that "The object of the convention shall be to compel the piratical States to perpetual peace." Jefferson prepared a detailed plan for the interested states.
Jefferson's plan for an international coalition foundered on the shoals of indifference and a belief that it was cheaper to pay the tribute than fight a war.
Nevertheless, Jefferson was able to report in his sixth annual message to Congress in December 1806 that in addition to the successful completion of the Lewis and Clark expedition, "The states on the coast of Barbary seem generally disposed at present to respect our peace and friendship."

Henry George Jr. / Jefferson and the Land Question
Jefferson is a pole star among political philosophers because he based his politics on the eternal, self-evident, fundamental truths that all men are created free and equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inherent and unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Jefferson, by fortune and culture, of the silk stockings and red heels, consciously, deliberately, with definite and fixed purpose, sided with the wool hats and sabots.
The fact that Jefferson always kept clearly in mind was that "a subsistence is easily gained here." He explained this by the first principles of political economy, namely, that men had easy access to natural opportunities.

Jefferson was consequently obliged to resort to the polite diplomatic fiction of notifying Genet in conversation that the Senate's constitutional share of the treaty-making power made it advisable for him to delay any negotiations for a new commercial treaty until that body reconvened as scheduled later in 1793.
Jefferson duly submitted the Spanish agents' letter and its enclosure to Washington, without revealing his prior knowledge of Genet's address, and then instructed Governor Isaac Shelby of Kentucky in accordance with their wishes.
Jefferson's Cabinet colleagues advised him to emphasize Genet's challenge to American neutrality and his disrespect for constituted authority in the United States, and Hamilton also urged him to stress Genet's involvement in domestic politics as evidence of a calculated French design to subvert popular confidence in the Washington administration.

WallBuilders | Resources | George Washington, Thomas Jefferson & Slavery in Virginia
Jefferson’s reference to the role of the British Crown in the continuance of slavery in Virginia is significant.
The address was ignored, and Jefferson in the first draft of the Declaration alleged this as one of the wrongs suffered at the hands of the British government, but his colleagues suppressed the clause.
Jefferson planned nobly for the exclusion of slavery from the whole as yet unorganized domain of the nation a measure which would have belted the slave States with free territory, and so worked toward universal freedom.
