George Leslie Mackay, the first Canadian missionary to Taiwan and a man who continues to be revered in that country, was the focus of a recent forum, organized by the York University and University of Toronto Joint Centre for Asia Pacific Studies (JCAPS).
Mackay is considered an important figure in Taiwan's history, yet he is little-known in Canada outside of the Taiwanese community and the Presbyterian Church.
"Mackay is unique among all the missionaries of his era, and this conference [served] as a forum for examining his legacy," says conference organizer Michael Stainton, a research associate at JCAPS and a York PhD student in anthropology.

George Leslie Mackay was born the youngest of six children of George Mackay and Helen Sutherland, farmers, in Zola Village,(1) Zorra Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.(2) The community in which Mackay was raised in Oxford County was primarily Scottish, and a number of Mackay's family members were Calvinist Presbyterian ministers.(3)
While in Scotland studying and working as a missionary in Cowgate and Grassmarket,(9) Mackay applied for foreign missionary status and was later accepted, being commissioned as the first foreign missionary of the Canadian Presbyterian Mission on 9 March 1872.
