 | | George is taken away by the city officials, and once again Eva remains alone with Ox, who tells her that George is slowly losing his reason and becoming mad. |
 | | At her wits'end, Eva lashes out at him, "as you hate George, whom I adore, I hate you!" Ox cannot bear to be hated: he is ready to become Eva's slave, George's slave, to hear that Eva does not hate him. |
