  Route 66 TV Show / Route 66 : TVparty!
George Maharis played the stronger and more interesting character, with a street-wise stance that served as a counter-weight to Milner's mostly strident portrayal.
George Maharis was forced to leave the series temporarily due to a nasty case of hepatitis in the spring of 1962, well into filming the show's third season.
Maharis made headlines when he was busted in 1974 for engaging in a sex act with a male hairdresser in a public bathroom in LA; he had been arrested previously on a charge of lewd conduct after propositioning a vice-squad officer in a Hollywood restaurant restroom in 1967 but, hey, that could happen to anybody.

George Maharis - Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
A most handsome, virile, not to mention charismatic rebel in 60s Hollywood, George Maharis was one of seven born to Greek immigrants in 1928.
Returning to TV in the 70s, George settled into a predictable pattern with lots of standard TV-movie action and a lead as a criminologist in the short-lived whodunit series "The Most Deadly Game" (1970).
George Maharis left the popular series "Route 66" almost near the end of its third season in an uproar over some contract dispute and was later replaced by the late Glenn Corbett as Martin Milner's new sidekick.

WorldNetDaily: Retiree documents illegals on border
When retired producer and director Mercedes Maharis settled on a mountainside overlooking the desert plains of Cochise County, Arizona, she thought the only things she would be filming were the vistas and the abundant wildlife, but that was before she discovered her new home sat astride a major smuggling route for illegal aliens.
Once Maharis, a former television producer and sister-in-law to "Route 66" actor George Maharis, got over the shock of her retirement not being the tranquil experience she and her husband had dreamed of, she did what she knew how to do best — she made a film.
Behind Maharis' home, she discovered after moving in in May 2004, is a worn out patch of desert grass and shrubbery that serves as a staging area for smugglers to pick up illegal aliens.

This was so with George Maharis and Marty Milner, who recently co-starred in the CBS-TV show, Route 66.
So was George's, but Marty felt, for the sake of the script, that there should be a contrast between them and that if anybody came on strong it should be Maharis and not himself.
Maharis didn't see it that way and came the day they theoretically slugged it out on the set!

However, in the fourth (and last) season Maharis was replaced by Glenn Corbett after he contracted hepatitis, the most serious scourge of the gay community prior to the appearance of AIDS.

Maharis is actually quite good in the lead role and Milland adds some nice support, but the tale suffers from being told from the point of retrospective, as something that happened in the past.
