 Brief Biographies of Mechanical Engineers
George Forrester of Liverpool was perhaps the next to have a major influence on locomotive design (Rogers summary in book on Chapelon).
George Hally was chief mechanical engineer of the Metropolitan Railway from 1923 to 1933.
Marshall states that Markham was born in Northampton on 1 March 1823 and died in Tapton House, Chesterfield (by which time he had become Managing Director of Staveley Ironworks), on 30 August 1888.

Scott, not Ulysses S. Grant, was the first to hold this rank since George Washington.
1854 Dr. George W. Bickley, a Virginian who had moved to Ohio, organized the first "castle," or local branch, of the Knights of the Golden Circle in Cincinnati and soon took the order to the South, where it was enthusiastically received.

Henri Giffard, a French engineer, flew in a controllable (more or less) steam-engine-powered balloon, 144 ft long and 39 ft in diameter, inflated with 88,000 cu ft of coal gas.
The British dirigible R-34, commanded by Maj. George H. Scott, left Firth of Forth, Scotland (July 2), and touched down at Mineola, L.I., 108 hr.
The eastbound trip was made in 75 hr.
