McConnell got his musical feet wet in the mid-1980s playing bars and frat houses in the college town of Oxford, Miss., with Panic keyboardist John "JoJo" Hermann in the local band Beanland, named after the street where their buddies lived.
The music produced by McConnell, Hermann and their cohorts - vocalist/guitarist/band leader John Bell, bassist Dave Schools, drummer Todd Nance, and percussionist Domingo "Sunny" Ortiz - is a Southern rock, blues and boogie fusion all its own, with the band in a constant state of evolution.
McConnell described a Widespread Panic show as an "experience" and the fans as "family." The communication between the band and its audience is "similar in a way to the basic primal energy of you play music and somebody responds and gives you energy.
