Mikes cut short the confused arguments about when, where, what and if at all (my wife was a bit reluctant, having an inkling that the main burden of such an enterprise would fall on her).
Mikes undertook to find a butcher who would perform the final act in the traditional Hungarian manner-no mean task.
There were not only Mikes and his girlfriend; my son brought down two friends of his, two professors of political science at various American universities, also one of his daughters, with the reluctant agreement of the Pig Committee.

Any Souvenirs?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
George Mikes is an Hungarian born journalist and writer who migrated accidently to the UK in 1938.
Mikes' journey starts in prosperous Bavaria in what was then called West Germany and travels via Austria, Yugoslavia to Hungary; Czechoslovakia refused him entry.
Not that this book is a dry summing up of facts; throughout George Mikes treats the matter slightly tongue in cheek, with an undercooled sort of humour.

Il pubblico di lingua inglese potrà gustare tutti i brani di George Mikes che vi sono riportati, ma se non conosce l'italiano perderà necessariamente il discorso di critica e di approfondimento sull'autore e sul fenomeno umoristico.
This literary work constitutes a deep and very articulated essay on the humor themes and besides it results to be a vast panorama on the whole literary work of George Mikes, an author that has written up to 37 books which have sold million of copies all around the world.
Anyway the English readers can taste all George Mikes' literary passages, but of course if they don't know the Italian language they will lose the critical discourse about the author and about the humor philosophy.

It became associated with Saint George, and England claimed him as their patron saint and used his cross as a banner.

Six half-hours that combined the wit and wisdom of Muir and Norden with the voices of at least two of Britain's finest comedy talents, June Whitfield and Ronnie Barker.
Candidly, Denis Norden has since admitted that cribbing Mikes' title and idea was about as far as the adaptation went, however.
Although, at face value, this might appear to be one of the lost nuggets of British TV - none of the six programmes is believed to have survived on film or tape - the series went down like the proverbial lead balloon and was forgotten almost immediately.
