George J. Mitchell was born on August 20, 1933, in Waterville, Maine, to Mary Saad, a factory worker, and George Mitchell, a laborer.
Mitchell provided one of the most memorable moments of the hearing when he admonished Oliver North to "please remember, that it is possible for an American to disagree with you on aid to the Contras and still love God, and still love this country, just as much as you do.
Mitchell's mission was eventually completed on April 12, 1998, with the signing of a three-stranded multilateral peace agreement which was approved by public referendum on May 22, 1998.

George C. Mitchell of Winfield, Kan., is of Scotch descent and a native of Ohio, born in New Matamoras, Washington county, that state, May 6, 1874.
Mitchell was Mary Ellen, daughter of James Swartz, a native of Maryland, who came to Ohio when a young man. He, too, was a soldier in the Civil war and gave his life at the battle of Antietam as a sacrifice to the preservation of the Union.
Mitchell did not return to Ohio after his marriage, but remained in Winfield as secretary and bookkeeper for the S. Myton Hardware Company until July 1, 1905, when he was made assistant county treasurer and has filled that position continuously to the present time.
