He was educated at Plymouth grammar-school and Edinburgh University, where he took his M.D. degree.
He devoted much time and energy to the encouragement of Indian art, on yarious aspects of which he wrote valuable monographs, and his name was identified with the representation of India at all the principal international exhibitions from 1857 to 1901.

A report in The Canberra Times says the trust chairman, barrister Simon Molesworth, has also hinted at Federal Government plans for a national register of "no-go zones" for wind-farm developments to protect the visual amenity of "significant landscapes", such as the vast grassland plain formed by the 20,000ha lake bed.
He also warned the Federal Government not to vacate the field of national heritage protection, saying it would be a "return to the bad old days of no identification of heritage places and values".
Mr Molesworth said the Lake George landscape merited national and global recognition for its geological significance, indigenous history and biodiversity.
