George Montagu (1753 - June 20, 1815) was an England natural history.
Montagu is best known for his Ornithological Dictionary (1802) and he contributed significantly to early knowledge of British birds.
Montagu was born at the family home of Lackham House in Hampshire, and baptised at Lacock Church on July 9, 1753.

In Montagu's Supplement to the Ornithological dictionary of 1813 many observations made by Anstice are recorded and gifts of birds from him are mentioned.
Somerset, unlike Devon, was liberally supplied with duck decoys, the utility of these structures to a duck fancier like Montagu being stressed again and again Many observations first published in Montagu's Supplement and other publications received their first airings in these letters.
Montagu's account of this discovery was not published until 1818, three years after his demise.

Their prototype was George Montagu, the methodical, vigorous, immensely painstaking lieutenant-colonel in the Wiltshire Militia who fought as a young man in the war with the American colonies and was later court-martialled and drummed out of his profession for causing trouble among his brother officers with some provocative marital skirmishing.
Montagu injected into the subject a brisk efficiency and a down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach that verged on the graceless and chilly.
Montagu `sweeps the ground as a shield to defend the more tender parts;' and this is the only instance known to me in the case of birds, of any structure serving as a shield.

Sir George Montagu (1750–1829), admiral, second son of Admiral John Montagu (governor), and brother of Captain James Montagu, and of Edward Montagu (1755–1799), was born on 12 Dec. 1750.
In the armament of 1790 Montagu was appointed to the Hector of 74 guns, and, continuing to command her, went out to the Leeward Islands in 1793 with Rear-admiral Gardner, and thence to Jamaica, to convoy the homeward-bound trade.
Montagu married in 1783 his first cousin, Charlotte, daughter and coheiress of George Wroughton of Wilcot, Wiltshire, and had issue a daughter and four sons, of whom the eldest, George Wroughton, assumed the name of Wroughton in 1826, and died a lieutenant-colonel in the army in 1871.

The eldest son was Col. George Montagu (1788-1871), who succeeded to an estate at Wilcot, Wiltshire on the death of his aunt, Susannah Wroughton, but he had to change his name from Montagu to Wroughton.
When Col. George died in 1871, the estate passed to his brother, Admiral J.W. Montagu (1790-1882) who was then resident at Seend Manor, Wiltshire.
The son, Captain George Edward, (of the 84th Regiment) who died at an early age in 1878, fell out of favour with his family because of his association (and later marriage) with an Irish Catholic lady with whom he had 3 sons and one daughter.
