George Patterson Nigh (born June 9, 1927), a U.S. Democratic Party politician, served as Governor of Oklahoma on two separate occasions.
He was born in McAlester, Oklahoma, and was the son of Wilbur R. and Irene Crockett Nigh.
From November, 2005 to April, 2006, he served as Interim Director of the state Tourism and Recreation Department, during the agency's search for a permanent director.

Matlock is the 26th recipient of the award which is given annually in honor of the former governor through an endowment established by the late Julian Rothbaum, a Tulsa oil man, banker and former state regent for higher education.
Nigh, also a former president of the University of Central Oklahoma, began his political career by serving four terms in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
He met Nigh as ECU’s representative to the George Nigh Leadership Academy in February, which emphasizes character, leadership and making a difference in public service, and comes with a $1,000 scholarship.

The judges of the vice-admiralty courts in certain of the colonies, limited by 41 George III.
This liberal provision puts the judges of the colonial courts of vice-admiralty above all suspicion of their decisions being influenced by unworthy motives -- a suspicion they were not entirely free from when their emoluments depended mainly on their fees.

Nigh said that some people voted against him or his programs, but he didn't "hate" them, but nowadays there seems to be a lot of "hate." This is most evident at the national level, Nigh said.
Nigh said one of the things he was proudest of accomplishing in his governorship is improvements for the mentally disabled.

 Rural Lawmaker Commends Past Governor For Establishing ‘Northwest Passage’ Highway
Begley, D-Goodwell, presented House Concurrent Resolution 1067 to Governor Nigh on the House floor Thursday.
The resolution states that in the face of adversity, the former Governor “recognized the critical need to aid economic development in northwestern Oklahoma”; and secured $97.1 million to finance the 331-mile project from the Oklahoma State Capitol northwest to the Colorado state line.
A citation was presented by Begley on the House floor extending sincere appreciation to Swineford and commending the commissioner for his contribution to the people of Oklahoma.

 Draper case raises complex legal questions
After spending most of Friday behind closed doors with his staff.  Gov. George Nigh announced that House Speaker Dan Draper and his Sidekick Joe Fitzgibbon had suspended themselves from the Legislature following their convictions.
    Nigh’s only official act in the suspension was to announce it, something Rep. Robert Henry, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said had to be done.
    Nigh said he did not know if the suspension would make the two lawmakers ineligible for re-election in 19884 if they are still appealing the verdict.

 Draper, Fitzgibbon Suspended From Office
    Nigh said the suspensions are based on a 1981 law passed at the height of the county commissioners’ scandal.  The law calls for the automatic suspension of any state official convicted of a felony and mandates that the governor appoint a temporary replacement. 
    Nigh said he talked with Attorney General Mike Turpen early Friday, but did not ask for an opinion.  Nigh said there is “no gray area” in the law.
    Nigh said he would call a special session if needed, but he does not believe that it is necessary at this time.
