George Washington Orton (January 10, 1873-June 26, 1958) was a Canadian middle-distance runner.
Born in Strathroy, Ontario, Orton did his undergraduate studies in at the University of Toronto, before switching to the University of Pennsylvania in 1893.
Orton competed in three events, two steeplechase competitions and the 400 m hurdles.

In 1911, George Orton bought seven acres of land on the Victoria Crescent Field where new erecting sheds were purpose-built to house the building and painting of electric scenic railways.

Orton's victory was not recognized in Canada until after his death.

George Washington Orton was born January 10, 1873, in Strathroy (or Stratbury), Ontario, the son of Oliver Henry Orton and Mary Ann Irvine Orton.
In 1925 Orton was appointed director of athletics for the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition, held in Philadelphia in 1926.
Orton was a member of the Belmont Cricket Club, the Merion Cricket Club, the New York Athletic Club, and the University of Pennsylvania Track Club.

The Strathroy, Ontario native did his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto and his graduate studies at Penn. Before he was invited to compete at the Olympics, Orton was one of the top runners in North America.
After the Olympics, the King of Belgium gave Orton an award for "skill and sportsmanship" and he was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.

Orton was Canadian and U.S. mile champion in 1892-93, won 4 consecutive U.S. 1-mile titles and 3 consecutive 2-mile titles.
Representing the University of Pennsylvania (at the time there were no national teams), he placed 1st in the 2500-metre steeplechase in a time of 7:34.4, and on the same day, he won a Bronze Medal in the 400-metre Hurdles (time of 58.5 seconds).

Canada's first Olympic Champion was Ontario-born George Orton, who won the 2500m Steeplechase event on 22 July 1900 at Paris, aged 27.
Seven days earlier he had placed third in the 400m Hurdles (no bronze medals were awarded then).
However, Orton actually competed for the USA and it was the 12-strong Shamrock Lacrosse Team of Winnipeg who gained Canada's first "official" Olympic Gold at St. Louis in July of 1904.
