George Peabody was born in Danvers, Massachusetts, in 1795, into a family of modest means.
Peabody's failing health precluded the possibility of a final return to his native country, and he died on 4 November 1869 at the age of seventy-four in the presence of a few close friends.
Peabody's will stipulated that he was to be buried in the town of his birth, Danvers, Massachusetts, and Prime Minister Gladstone arranged to have his remains returned to America on the Monarch, the newest and largest ship in Her Majesty's Navy.

He was born in the part of Danvers which is now Peabody, Mass., on the 18th of February 1 795.
He gave £50,000 for educational purposes at Danvers; £ 200,000 to found and endow a scientific Institute in Baltimore; various sums to Harvard University; £700,000 to the trustees of the Peabody Educational Fund to promote education in the southern states; and £50o,000 for the erection of dwelling-houses for the working-classes in London.

PEABODY, GEORGE (Feb. 18, 1795–Nov. 4, 1869), merchant, financier, philanthropist, was born in South Danvers, now Peabody, Mass., the son of Thomas and Judith (Dodge) Peabody.
The poverty of his parents prevented George from receiving more than a rudimentary education, and at the age of eleven he was apprenticed to a grocer in Danvers.
Peabody was an incorporator and the president of the Eastern Railroad, built in 1836, and his experience in railroad financing showed him the profitable character of capital importation.

The George Peabody Library, formerly the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, dates from the founding of the Peabody Institute in 1857.
The Peabody Library remained part of the Peabody Institute until 1966 when the library collection was transferred to the City of Baltimore and administered as a department of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.
Peabody's original gift, the George Peabody Library is a non-circulating collection open to the general public.

Peabody spent many years in realty and mining, serving as president, vice-president, or director of many firms, but retired in 1906 to pursue a life of public service.
