George Pell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Pell was born in Ballarat, Victoria, and educated at Catholic schools Loreto Convent School and St Patrick's College at his mother's insistence, although his father was a Protestant.
As Archbishop of Sydney, Pell refused the sacraments to known or self-declared homosexuals.
It was recalled that Pell had accompanied Father Gerald Ridsdale, convicted of sexual offences against children, to court at the latter's trial in 1993, but he never gave evidence in support of Ridsdale or sought to protect him.

Pell had considerable support, so much so that the Royal Exhibition Building was hired as a temporary cathedral for the massive congregation that saw his enthronement.
Ironically, perhaps, Pell gained considerable credibility with his critics last year when, accused of abusing a boy at a youth camp 40 years ago, he stood down as archbishop while the complaint was investigated.

Pell informed the bishops that he would be present for Fessio's address in Melbourne, and would personally propose the vote of thanks.
Pell is trying to undo that conditioning-"There is no truly Catholic Church without bishops and priests and deacons," Pell preached at his investiture-but this battle is already in a late phase.
During his investiture as head of the Church in Melbourne, Archbishop George Pell promised that his archdiocese would remain "fully united with the universal Church around the Pope." Shortly thereafter, he published Issues of Faith and Morals, a high-school textbook which examines contemporary issues in the light of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Now, Cardinal Pell tends to go back to the pre-Vatican II position of the Church, which was very much simply this is the way it is, these are the dos, these are the don'ts, do you what you're told.
GEORGE PELL: Everybody knows that we have to use our conscience, we have to… the point as issue is whether our conscience has primacy or is supreme and whether a Catholic can choose to reject central doctrines, central teachings of Jesus Christ and/or the Church and be regarded as a perfectly good Catholic.
GEORGE PELL: No, there's plenty of scope, but if you make those decisions and they run contrary to central church teachings, you can't claim to be a good Catholic.

Compelled By Faith | An Interview with George Cardinal Pell
George Pell, a brilliant student in Rome and Oxford, was chosen by Pope John Paul II to be Archbishop of Melbourne and then Sydney.
Pell's unprecedented double appointment reflects the fact that the Pope sees him as a vital front-line figure in the fight to reform the Church.
George Weigel, author of Witness to Hope and The Courage to be Catholic, states: "Pell has become a lightening rod, it seems to me, not because he is the conniving, authoritarian heavy portrayed by some, but because he has ideas that challenge the dominant consensus among Australia's intellectual and cultural tastemasters."

George is a constant reminder of the spiritual moribundity of the modern Catholic Church and his very presence must make reformers smile with glee.
It is undoubtedly more romantic to see Pell as a Prince of the Church battling Satan and his dark minions rather than a paternalistic and egotistical old pedagogue, attempting to nail his own rickety moral framework onto women who wish to have control over their own fertility.
As for the notion that Pell wasn’t attempting to subvert the ability of women to control their own fertility in line with Catholic teachings — please let Jeff know because he was the one who posted this item to his blog on what seemed to be this very premise.

Pell, and other fundamentalists, must realise that their right to practice religion freely in our society stops just short of the place where the decisions that they make as a matter of faith begin to affect people who do not share their beliefs.
Pell is cherry picking the things he doesn't like, dresses up his theories in flowery pious language, and wonders why others, not of his belief, react to what is really the stench of autocracy.
