Born in Watford, England, the oldest child of Louise and George Pearkes, attended Berkhamsted School, he immigrated to Alberta in 1906 with his brother and they settled near Red Deer.
He was 29 years old, and an Acting Major in the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Bn., Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

They soon were under attack from the front and the sides, but Pearkes decided that the only real option was to keep pressing forward.
Pearkes, who later served as a member of Parliament from Vancouver Island, the minister of defence, and B.C.'s lieutenant-governor, was awarded the Victoria Cross, Canada's highest military honour, for his efforts that day.

During the advance of 30/31 October 1917, as a member of the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion, Major George Randolph Pearkes of Watford, Hertfordshire, England, participated in the battle at Passchendaele.
Quickly appreciating the situation, he captured and held this point, thus enabling his further advance to be successfully pushed forward.
This he attacked with a Lewis-gun section and captured a further 35 prisoners with machine-guns, thus enabling the assault party to continue their advance.
