George Newlands Reid PC MSP (born 4 June 1939) is the Presiding Officer (Speaker) of the Scottish Parliament.
George Reid was born in 1939 at Tullibody, near Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, and educated at Dollar Academy, Clackmannanshire, and the University of St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, where he was awarded a first-class Master's degree in History in 1962.
After several years away from Scottish politics, he heralded his comeback in 1994 by delivering an academic-style lecture at the SNP conference, drawing on his knowledge of continental European politics to argue a case for why a party like the SNP could be expected to prosper if a Scottish Parliament was established.

David Martin Scott Steel (born March 31, 1938), Lord Steel of Aikwood, is a Scottish politician and a Liberal Democrat member of the UK House of Lords.
He campaigned for Scottish devolution, and in 1999 was elected to the Scottish Parliament as a Liberal Democrat member for the Lothian region.
He stepped down as an MSP when the parliament was dissolved for the 2003 election, but remained as Presiding Officer until he had supervised the election of his successor on May 7 of that year.

THE Scottish Parliament was drawn into a fresh row over pension holdings in tobacco companies yesterday when a group of MSPs demanded Holyrood invest only in ethical firms.
The group, led by the Green MSP Eleanor Scott, called for the whole parliament to be given a vote on the issue - confident it would choose to end all unethical investments.

 Kerr reaps reward for bringing in ban on smoking
Health Minister Andy Kerr was last night named The Herald Diageo Scottish Politician of the Year 2006 in recognition of his work to bring in the controversial smoking ban in public places.
Mr Kerr accepted the prize in front of 450 guests at the Prestonfield Hotel in Edinburgh, after beating off competition from his fellow nominees, Environment Minister Ross Finnie and Nicola Sturgeon, the deputy leader of the SNP.
Mr Kerr was the eighth winner of the most prestigious political prize north of the border, following in the steps of Donald Dewar, Jim Wallace, Jack McConnell, Malcolm Chisholm, Margaret Curran, and George Reid (twice).
