George Roupell, born in 1892, he was commissioned into The East Surrey Regiment in 1912.
Lt Col Roupell commanded the 1st Bn from 1935 until July 1939.
On return to the United Kingdom, Brigadier Roupell was appointed Garrison Commander at Chatham, his last appointment before retiring from the Army.

A native of Tipperary, Ireland, Roupell was a 1912 graduate of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.
Lieutenant Roupell was awarded the V.C. for action at Hill 60, near Zwarteleen in the Ypres Salient, Belgium, April 20, 1915.
They were released in 1920, but Roupell reported that their treatment was “most brutal in nature.” In May of 1940 he was serving as Brigadier commanding the 36th Infantry Brigade near Amiens when the Germans overran their position.

He was 23 years old, and a lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, The East Surrey Regiment, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 20 April 1915 at Hill 60, Belgium, Lieutenant Roupell was commanding a company which was being subjected to a most severe bombardment.
Although wounded several times, he remained at his post and led his company in repelling a strong German assault.

 Lieutenant George Rowland Roupell
George Rowland Patrick Roupell was born in Tipperary on 7th April 1892 and was commissioned into The East Surrey Regiment in 1912.
Lieutenant Roupell was decorated with his Victoria Cross on 12th July 1915 by HM King George V. During 1918 he was attached to the British Expeditionary Force under the Command of General Edmund Ironside, which was sent to North Russia to strengthen the Allied Forces in support of the Tsarist Russians.
In addition to his Victoria Cross he was awarded the Russian Order of St George and the French Croix de Guerre, and was Mentioned in Despatches.

East Surreys were terribly hard pressed, and Lieutenant George Roupell won the Victoria Cross, as described elsewhere, for the splendid courage and tenacity with which, though several times wounded, he held his post with the remnants of his company until he came.
During the terrific bombardment of our position, which preceded the German counter attack, Lieutenant Roupell was wounded in several places; nevertheless, he refused to quit his post and led his men in repelling a determined assault by the enemy.
Lieutenant Roupell was awarded the V.C., for "most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty," while Company Sergeant-Major Reid received the D.C.M., for conspicuous gallantry and valuable service." Company Sergeant Major Reid, who is twenty-nine years of age, is a Londoner.
