 ARTSEDGE: Celebrating Sondheim
Merrily We Roll Along was based on George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's 1934 play of the same title, which itself was an unwieldy and unsuccessful attempt to break new ground.
There was also a self-absorbed composer of musical comedies and concertos named Sam Frankl, modeled after Kaufman's frequent collaborator George Gershwin.
Thus, Prince, Sondheim, and librettist George Furth fell into the trap of fitting the material to the concept, rather than finding a concept to fit the material.

George S. Kaufman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kaufman was a pivotal figure in the development of theatrical writing in the 20th century, working with collaborators who were rooted in vaudeville, in musical comedy, in film, in journalism, in prose fiction, in television, in revue, and in the commercial Broadway theatre.
A noted (but married) ladies' man, Kaufman found himself in the center of a scandal in 1936 when, in the midst of a child custody suit, the former husband of actress Mary Astor threatened to publish one of Astor's diaries purportedly containing extremely explicit details of an affair between Kaufman and the actress.
Kaufman was also a noted director, staging the original productions of The Front Page by Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and the Frank Loesser musical Guys and Dolls for which he won the 1951 Best Director Tony Award.

Philip Kaufman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kaufman is based in San Francisco alongside other such luminaries as Francis Ford Coppola, Chris Columbus and nearby neighbor George Lucas, where he runs his production company Walrus and Associates with his family.
Philip Kaufman (born October 23, 1936) is a film director and screenwriter from Chicago, Illinois.
Many critics cite that Kaufman's contribution to American film is that he's a director who refuses to be chosen as a one genre director, since every film he does is never in the same genre.

 The Sondheim Review - v2n2
Furth changed the central characters of the original 1934 Kaufman and Hart play from a playwright and a painter into a composer and a librettist who write musical comedies together.
But the two musicals he's written with George Furth stay close-sometimes perilously close-to home.
Sondheim and Furth's ability to adopt a common verbal style and use it to express ideas that are clearly very close to their hearts and experiences shows that they truly are parallel minds who met.

Kaufman's unpredictability was such that audiences never knew whether or not they were in on the joke; when the comedian succumbed to cancer, many wondered whether he was faking it.
