GERMAIN, GEORGE SACKVILLE, 1ST VISCOUNT SACKVILLE [Germain, George Sackville, 1st Viscount Sackville], 1716-85, British soldier and statesman.
He was known as Lord George Sackville until 1770, when under the terms of a will he took the name Germain.
However, his vague orders to Sir William Howe to join Burgoyne may have cost Burgoyne the campaign of 1777, while the confusion in the plans of Lord Cornwallis and Sir Henry Clinton, arising partly from Germain's ignorance of American geography, contributed to the disaster of the Yorktown campaign.

George Sackville Germain, first Viscount Sackville (1716-1785)
Third son of Lionel Sackville, first duke of Dorset, known as Lord Sackville until 1770, when he took the name Germain having inherited estates from Lady Elizabeth Germain.
Ironically, his disgrace endeared him to the future George III, who was very hostile to the actions of his grandfather George II and his governments, and when George III came to the throne, Sackville was restored.
From 1775 to 1782 he was secretary of state for America, and as such played a key part in planning the British effort during the War of American Independence, a role in which he did not shine.

At this time the site of Fort Sackville, which was the key to Clark's winning of the Old Northwest, was covered by a warehouse, an old grain elevator, a feed mill, and a number of second- and third-rate boarding houses, interspersed with weed patches.
Cheers interrupted his speech, as he told the senators: "The historical significance of this memorial and the feats and record of General George Rogers Clark are second to none in America, even east of the Alleghenies." Compared to Clark's march with "his handful of patriots.

George Sackville spent his early years in Ireland where his father was Lord Lieutenant.
Intelligent, talented, ambitious, Sackville was gaining prominence in both the army and the House of Commons when, in 1758, he was made commander in chief of the British force in Germany under Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick.
During the war Germain's quarrelsomeness had alienated the British commanders in chief, George III, and the cabinet; it substantially impaired his leadership of the war both in America and England.
