Sanders was a trained singer who once signed to sing in "South Pacific." Albums like "The George Sanders Touch" ("a worldly touch -- a gentle caress one moment, a vise-like grasp in the next," according to the liner notes) provided a crooning background for the '50s maneuverings of would-be cads.
Sanders did nothing to dispel the notion that he shared the less than enlightened views espoused by some of his on-screen characters.
The portrait that emerges from his memoirs, and from Richard VanDerBeet's biography, "George Sanders: An Exhausted Life" (Madison, 1990), is of a shy, complex, obscurely troubled, imperfect but basically decent man (he was heartbroken when his beloved wife Benita died of cancer) who hid from the world behind a cynical mask.

George Sanders   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Throughout much of his screen career, actor George Sanders was the very personification of cynicism, an elegantly dissolute figure whose distinct brand of anomie distinguished dozens of films during a career spanning nearly four decades.
Born in St. Petersburg on July 3, 1906, Sanders and his family fled to the U.K. during the Revolution, and he was later educated at Brighton College.
Prior to the release of the latter, Sanders killed himself on August 25, 1972, by overdosing on sleeping pills while staying in a Costa Brava hotel; his suicide note read, "Dear World, I am leaving you because I am bored." He was 66 years old.

After his role as the scheming flmailer in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940), and the same directors Foreign Correspondent (1940), Sanders firmly established him among the Hollywood acting elite with a misogynistic performance in the adaptation of Somerset Maugham’s novel The Moon and Sixpence (1943).
