Sanderson, a English immigrant from Platte County, Missouri, volunteered for military service in 1846, and was assigned as assistant surgeon to the Mormon Battalion.
Mormon volunteers soon came to despise the good doctor, whose standard remedy was to "puke ‘em, sweat ‘em, and purge ‘em." He was known by the epithet "Doctor Death." Sanderson's diary is a valuable addition to the sparse original sources on this aspect of the Mexican War.
The Sanderson Journal is scheduled for publication in the Marriott Library Tanner Trust series.
