George Seddon was the eighth child of John Seddon of Blakelea, Lancashire.
By 1827, Thomas II had retired and George III formed a new partnership with a cabinetmaker and upholsterer called Nicholas Morel and the firm was called Morel and Seddon.
Carter described Seddon as 'the most original of the Gothic revivalists', for in his designs it was 'impossible to trace the origin of the detail to any particular medieval style or building'.

In 1815 Thomas’s son Thomas Seddon (1792–1864) took over the business and in 1817 was joined by his brother George Seddon (1796–1857).
(2) Thomas Seddon, son of the second of that name and great-grandson of the founder, worked in the firm for a short time; afterwards he and his brother, (3) J. Seddon, pursued careers independent of the firm, which closed in 1868.

After working for Seddon & Sons he was sent to Paris in 1841 to study ornamental art and there became a proficient draughtsman.
On his return to England in 1842 he diligently pursued the career of designer in the family firm, in 1848 winning a silver medal from the Society of Arts for his design for an ornamental sideboard.
Following a serious bout of rheumatic fever in 1850–51 Seddon decided to devote himself solely to painting and in 1852 he exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy.
