George Shannon was born in Pennsylvania in 1787, of Irish-Protestant ancestry.
Shannon was perhaps the one man on the expedition who either of the captains would have been most likely to meet at home on terms of social equality.
Shannon recaptured the horses, but upon returning to the river, he proceeded up upstream, expecting to join his comrades at one of their night camps.

 More About Private George Shannon
In 1807, Shannon was one of the force under Ensign Nathaniel Pryor which attempted to return the Mandan Chief Sheheke (popularly referred to as "Big White" because of his size and unusually light complexion) to his village after having visited the President in Washington.
Shannon was with William Clark in Shelbyville, Kentucky on October28, 1809, when Clark saw the account of Lewis's death in the Frankfort Argus.
George Shannon died suddenly in court at Palmyra, Missouri in 1836 at the age of 51, and is buried in that city.

Shannon was born in Claysville, PA, in 1785, the son of George Shannon Sr., who came to America from Ireland, and the former Jane Milligan.
That William Clark did not consider Shannon to be a first-rate hunter was evidenced by the captain's decision to send John Colter with provisions in search of Shannon during Shannon's 16-day absence in August and September 1804.

Seven Communities have verbally committed to have a wooden statue carved resembling Private George Shannon to put in their communities.

Shannon, a Pennsylvanian whose family had moved to the Ohio frontier in 1800, was one of the first men to volunteer for the expedition.
Shannon's solo 16-day adventure began on August 26, 1804, near present Vermillion, South Dakota, when he and George Drouillard were sent out to hunt for the expedition's few horses.
Shannon was in Pryor's group of four (the fourth being Hugh Hall) herding Shoshone and Nez Perce horses toward Canada to trade for supplies and assistance.

SHANNON, WILLIAM R. William R. Shannon, state legislator, son of George Shannon, was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on January 15, 1825.
Shannon graduated from Belmont Institute in Ohio and studied law under his uncle, Wilson Shannon, who was governor of Ohio for two terms and minister to Mexico under President John Tyler.
Shannon served as chairman of the Committee on Private Land Claims and was reelected in 1859.

Shannon probably had enlisted in the Corps of Discovery with Meriwether Lewis at Pittsburgh in 1803.
Clark asserted that he himself, as agent for the government, had hired Shannon in 1807 "to accompany and assist the Mandan Chief on his return to his Nation,...for which he was to receive Twenty five Dollars per Month." As to the amount of the pension, he concluded, "I conceive Mr.
Shannon justly entitled to, at least one half of the Salary he was receiving from the government, at the time this misfortune befell him, which has occasioned his disability."

 Young Shannon's Adventures: August 26 to September 11, 2004
Enjoy the journals of Josh Loftis (pictured left) as he re-enacts the travels of his ancestor, George Shannon, the youngest member of the expedition, during the sixteen days he was lost from the expedition in present-day northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota.
During the original expedition, Shannon and George Drouillard were sent searching for two horses that had strayed from camp on August 26.
Young Shannon was 18 when he joined the expedition as one of the "Nine Young Men from Kentucky." Josh graduated a year early from high school so he could participate in the Discovery Expedition's re-enactment.

Of all those who have proposed purloining the government and establishing a site more conducive to their own economic interest, my favorite is George D. Shannon, who suggested Hogham, a marshy spot between the Nisqually and McAllister Creek, to which he held title.
A native of New York who served a long and unprofitable apprenticeship in the railroad and lumber businesses, Shannon showed up in Olympia in 1870 as superintendent of construction for the Kalama to Tacoma spur of the Northern Pacific.
Conceding there were other claimants worth considering, Shannon proposed that the capital be "placed on wheels and run into that city, town, village, or hamlet or possession of a private citizens that makes the legislators the best offer."
