The statue, by sculptor, Desmond Fountain, was unveiled by HRH Princess Margaret in 1984 to celebrate the 375th anniversary of the settlement of Bermuda.
Somers commanded several British ships between 1600 and 1602, including the HMS Vanguard, HMS Swiftsure and HMS Warspite.
Somers was presumed dead by those in Virginia, but remained in Bermuda for 10 months, along with all those others who had survived the Sea Venture's wreck.

George was first settled in 1612, three years after the first English settlers in Bermuda, who had been on their way to (A state in the eastern United States; one of the original 13 colonies; one of the Confederate States in the American Civil War) Virginia, landed on Bermuda after a shipwreck.
George is no sterile relic, however; it is a living town, and its historic buildings function not only as museums but also as houses, restaurants, pubs and shops.

George Somers was born at Lyme in 1554, son of a wine importer who was in partnership with Sir Walter Raleigh.
Somers, like other Elizabethan captains from the southwest such as Sir Francis Drake, was essentially a pirate, preying on the galleons of Spain that plied the ocean with gold from the Americas.
St. George, on St. George's Island near the airport, is not the chief town of Bermuda; I don't know whether it's the spot where Somers landed, or whether larger Hamilton has its own twin.

 Admiral Sir George Somers colonized Bermuda for Britain
Sir George supervised the building of the 30 ton pinnace Patience while the 80 ton barque Deliverance was done by Sir Thomas Gates, both from spars and rigging of the wrecked "Sea Venture" and local cedar.
Instead, he carried Sir George's preserved body (less his heart, which had been cut out and buried in Bermuda, in strict accordance with his wishes) on board the Patience, pickled in a barrel, back to Lyme Regis in Dorset, where the Admiral was buried in 1611 at Whitchurch Canonicorum in Dorset.
On February 15, the Memorial Monument to Sir George Somers was unveiled in St. George's, with the 1st Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment in attendance.

During a vicious storm the Sea Venture strayed from the fleet and floundered on Bermuda’s reefs.

Sadly on a voyage back to Bermuda for more supplies, he died in there in 1610, "of a surfeit in eating of a pig" and the cluster of islands were known for a time as the Somers Islands in his honor; then the earlier Spanish name prevailed.
Sir George's heart was buried in Bermuda but his pickled body was brought back to the parish church in Whitchurch Canonicorum for burial, and where he has a modern memorial tablet, in the chancel.

George Somers of Lyme Regis and Whitchurch Canonicorum was the founder of the colony on the island of Bermuda in 1609.
He died only a year later on a return visit to the island, and his will lists some of the exotic items owned by the explorer including a carpet of ‘cloth of goulde’ and stylishly a pair of ‘breeches of cloath of gold’ and a doublet of the same material.

The Somers, or Bermuda Islands, following the shipwreck there in 1609 of Sir George Somers, were claimed by the Virginia Company, under the grants of its charters; lacking the required capital to colonize the Islands, this Company in 1612 sold its rights and interests in them to a new Company, which was chartered in 1615.
Elizabeth appears to have been his first wife and they lived for a time on what he terms in his will "the lower place." The house is not standing, it is presumed to have been on a little arm of the creek about 400 feet from the present house, between it and the Creek.

On July 25 a storm overtook and scattered the fleet in mid-Atlantic, and Sir George Somer's vessel, the "Sea-Adventure," was driven ashore on the Bermudas.
Therefore the whole dating of the 'late' plays attributed to Shakespeare depends on the relationship between the Somers incident and the internal evidence in the play itself, as there are no known external factors to definitely date the year of composition of The Tempest.
I therefore conclude that the Somers incident material is not integral to the 1623 edition of the play as we have it, which indicates that the Somers material was added on to make the play topical in 1610.
