Literary San Francisco - George Sterling
At Coppa's, the bohemian rendezvous on the famed Montgomery Block in San Francisco, Sterling's lines, "the blue-eyed vampire, sated at her feast / Smiles bloodily against the leprous moon" were inscribed on the wall-length mural, his name beside such immortals as Dante, Goethe and Rabelais.
Sterling himself was to end the trend, and his suicide by ingestion of cyanide in 1926 was perhaps the archetypal response to the city's turn-of-the-century bohemianism.
It wasn't that George Sterling was fundamentally misguided, or that his enthusiastic group of followers lacked sustainable talents, but the enchantment of California, and especially San Francisco, seemed to tempt artists into premature self-congratulation.

Sterling's vocational crisis was visibly exposed when, in 1914, he was divorced from Carrie and ventured east to test himself apart from his California status.
Sterling's efforts were commercially fruitless and personally humiliating, and he found himself lonely for his friends, removed from public tastes, and reduced to accepting charity.

The Thirst of Satan: Poems of Fantasy and Terror By George Sterling- Hippocampus Press
George Sterling is an unjustly forgotten American poet.
A master of the sonnet, Sterling generated such masterworks as "The Black Vulture," "Three Sonnets on Oblivion," and "The Muse of the Incommunicable." Sterling's poems range from the ethereality of "To a Girl Dancing" to the grim sadism of "The Lords of Pain" to the bracing atheism of "To Science."
This volume, the first selection of Sterling's verse in more than thirty years, will demonstrate why Sterling was so revered by Bierce, Theodore Dreiser, H. Mencken, and especially Clark Ashton Smith, who in his own fantastic verse sought to build upon the foundations Sterling laid.
